Choosing a gamertag you will not outgrow
Why the handles that last are short, sayable and free of letter substitutions — and how to build one from two words.

Most gamertags are chosen in a hurry, at the exact moment you least want to think about it: the account creation screen. Then you keep it for years.
The handles people never change share three traits, and none of them involve clever spelling.
Short enough to shout
Somewhere between six and ten characters is the sweet spot. Long enough to be distinctive, short enough to fit on a scoreboard and be read at a glance.
Two word parts is almost always the right structure: one concrete noun with an edge to it, and one modifier that suggests movement or role.
Skip the substitutions
Swapping letters for numbers made sense when everything was taken and nothing was searchable. Now it costs you: nobody can spell your handle after hearing it, and search does not connect your accounts.
If your first choice is gone, change one of the two words rather than mutating the spelling. You keep a name people can type from memory.
Think one platform ahead
Even if you have no plans to stream, check that the handle is free as a channel and a social username at the same spelling. Consistency across platforms is worth more than perfection on one.
