Title formulas that still work

Most memorable titles fit a small number of shapes: a single loaded word, a two-noun possessive, a full phrase lifted from the book's voice, or a question the story answers. Rotating between shapes is what stops a shortlist sounding generated.

Genre sets expectations before a reader opens anything. Fantasy tolerates abstraction and scale; mystery rewards a concrete object; literary fiction leans on an image with a double meaning.

Write the title next to your cover copy. If it repeats what the blurb already says, it is doing nothing — change the noun, not the structure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my theme and change only the structure?
Yes. Set the structure and regenerate — your theme words stay in the pool.
Are titles copyrightable?
Titles generally are not, but a title strongly associated with a well-known work is still a bad idea commercially. Search before you settle.
Why do some titles include my keyword and others do not?
Structures behave differently. Single-word titles rarely fit a keyword, while character-and-world titles almost always use it.
