Strong brand names usually come from one of four routes: an invented word, a metaphor, a compound of two real words, or a plainly descriptive phrase. Deciding the route first makes the shortlist far easier to judge.
Descriptive names are easy to understand and hard to own. Invented names are easy to own and need marketing to explain. Metaphors sit between the two, which is why so many established brands live there.
Score candidates on the boring criteria: can someone spell it after hearing it once, say it without hesitating, and find it in a search. A name that fails those three loses money quietly for years.
