Japanese given names: what to know first

Japanese names are written in kanji, and the same written name can have several readings while the same reading can be written many ways. That is why a romanised suggestion is only a starting point, never a complete name.

Meanings come from the chosen characters, not from the sound. Any tool that hands you a meaning alongside a romanised name without citing a dataset is inventing it.

If you are naming a character in published work, or a child, take a shortlist of romanised options to a source that documents readings and characters properly, or to a native speaker.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no kanji?
Because showing characters without verified readings and meanings would be misleading. We only present romanised forms.
Are these real Japanese names?
They follow the sound patterns of common romanised given names. Treat them as ideas to verify, not as attested names with documented meanings.
Can I use one for a story character?
Yes, and it is worth checking the reading with a Japanese speaker so the character's name lands as intended.
